How to reset Admin password in Joomla June 23, 2011

Posted by Tournas Dimitrios in Joomla-1.6.

This article will show you how to change Joomla’s administrator password with a simple Mysql query . This method is valid  for all versions of Joomla 1.0/1.5 /1.6 .

  • Open phpMyAdmin and select the Joomla database from the drop-down menu at left
  • Click the SQL tab (at the top navigation bar )
  • In the text field write the following SQL query
UPDATE  ‘jos_users’ SET ‘password’ =MD5(‘Your_New_Passwd’)  WHERE ‘jos_users’ ‘username’ = ‘admin’
At least you should know your username 🙂  , and replace ‘admin’ with it .
  • When you are ready , click on the Go button to submit the query
If everything goes fine , you will receive a “success ” confirmation . Now you should be able to login to Joomla with the new password .

During installation of Joomla , you where asked to customize the prefix of your table-names (for security reasons)  . If the prefix was modified , which I highly recommend , the query to Mysql should reflect yours table-name prefix .
